CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The tension in the room was so thick it felt like being wrapped in a wool blanket on a hot summer day. Jamie knew a band meeting was inevitable after what he’d done—he just hadn’t expected it to come this soon. Worse, he hadn’t expected it to be held in Ronnie’s office behind his house. The last thing he wanted was to face his old friend, or any of his bandmates for that matter, especially so close to where he’d done what he did. He also realized that he needed to play it cool until he could deliver the book and get whatever protection that woman could give him. His hope was that when this happened, it would be in the studio back in L.A, to discuss finishing touches on the album and maybe have to hear the news about Kelly. Never in his worst nightmares did he think it would be the evening after he’d crossed that line.

Making matters even worse, if that were possible, it was only him, Johnny, and Ronnie right now. Brian was on the way but hadn’t arrived yet. Jamie was sure they were going to jump him the second he entered the room, but aside from Johnny’s half-hearted nod, neither of them had paid him any attention. That might well be the most unnerving thing of all. Hell, he’d have almost preferred to have Ian in the room with them, just so he could get a better feel of what was going on, but their manager had been dealing with some guys who looked like men you definitely didn’t want to fuck with when he arrived, and Jamie had the distinct impression interrupting them would be very, very bad.

He knew what that little discussion was likely about, though. Didn’t take a genius to recognize some underworld cleaners. Especially if you were a rock star and traveled in the circles he’d been in the last decade.

Of course, that was a whole different thing to scare the shit out of him. If they were here, it meant Ronnie wasn’t reporting any of this to the cops. That, in and of itself, wasn’t too surprising—after all, that one chick had OD’d before Jamie ever got there. Dealing with dead hookers and near-dead groupies wasn’t exactly an uncommon thing for Ian to do. Especially not for Ronnie. But that was Kelly up there dead, too, not just some random whore they’d run into on the road. The supposed love of Ronnie’s life…no. Jamie had seen them together, had some inkling of their actual relationship. They really were in love, and unfortunately, seemed to be made for one another in many ways. Ronnie partied on the road, Kelly did it back at home, but it was all the same, and neither cared what the other did. It was a match made in Hell.

So why not report someone had murdered her?

Just thinking the word made Jamie’s guts clench and his bowels go loose. Being around a dead junkie who’d done it to themselves was one thing.
